 About Shiraz

 

 

 

Shiraz is located in Fars Province,Southwest Iran. The city is the treasury of Persian history and culture; and for centuries it has been synonymous with education,philosophy,art,and poetry. Archeological excavations have revealed that the history of Shiraz dates back to beyond 4 millennium BC. This “Garden City” has earned its reputation due to not only its diversity of natural resorts,historical sites,and monuments but also its electronics industries and medical advancements. Medical treatment and healthcare system and facilities indebted to Shiraz University of Medical Sciences (SUMS) are such specialized in Shiraz that have turned the city into a top health tourism destination in southern Iran.

Further,its geographical features provide for a range of activities including skiing in the winter resorts just some kilometers away,mountain climbing,and hiking in the woods. The climate diversity has made Shiraz a four-season city; although,the dominant climate is considered to be moderate.

A Brief Introduction on Major Sights

 

Persepolis

 

 

 

Persepolis or Takhte Jamshid is situated on a large platform on the top of Rahmat Mountain. Persepolis is an excellent manifestation of the creative art of Iranian architects. The glorious palaces of Persepolis were built over 150 years,starting in 521 B.C. Reliefs,carvings,and stone tablets with inscriptions on them in Ancient Persian,Elamite and Babylonian languages and cuneiform alphabet express the dignity of Achaemenid dynasty and retell their stories.

 

 

Pasargadae

 

 

 

Another sight attributed to Achaemenid era is Pasargadae,which lies 43 Kilometers to the north of Persepolis. Pasargadae was the first capital of the Achaemenid dynasty built in the reign of Cyrus the Great (559–530 BC). The main structure found in Pasargadae is the tomb of Cyrus the Great.

 

Religious Sites

 
 



Among religious sites is the shrine of Ahmad Ibn Musa (Shah-e-Cheragh),Vakil Mosque,Nasir-al-Molk Mosque,and Jame Atiq Mosque. The splendid ornament and decoration found in these places impress any visitor. For instance,in the Shrine of Ahmad Ibn Musa which houses the tomb of Ahmad Ibn Musa,a brother of Ali Ibn Musa al-Reza (PBUH),the eighth Shia Imam,the peaceful atmosphere is augmented with eye-catching mirror work all over the place. Nasir-al-Molk Mosque famed for being dominantly in pink; in addition,charms the viewers by its colorful glass windows especially when the sun shines through them. 

 

Persian Gardens and Old Houses

 


 



Gardens and old houses of well-known people are some common destinations for tourists in Shiraz. They usually favor extraordinary architecture. In general,geometry plays a significant role in Iranian architecture. These houses and buildings in the gardens,like any other Iranian construction follow certain geometrical patterns. One element that these structures have in common is a pool in the center of the yard or garden. Delgosha Garden,Afif Abad Garden,Eram Garden and Janat Garden are examples of renowned gardens. Zinatolmolk House,Narenjestane Ghavam Mansion,and Shapouri House are some of old houses in Shiraz.

 

The Tomb of Iranian Poets

 

Shiraz is also famous for being the city of poets,who were inspired by beautiful gardens of the city. Saadi,and Hafez are two most popular poets of Shiraz and Iran. Today,many people from all over the world come to visit their tombs. Visitors to Hafez tomb will normally face a place filled with flowers and trees,where traditional Iranian music is being played and people of different ages are reciting some sonnets of Hafez.

 

Shiraz,the Cultural Backbone of Iran

 

Shiraz,the Cultural Capital of Iran,is considered as the city of poetry and philosophy embracing the grave of two worldwide famous poets,Hafez and Saadi and others as Khajuye Kermani,Hamidi Shirazi,Baba Kouhi,Ahli Shirazi,Lotf-Ali Sooratgar,etc. Likewise,Shiraz has introduced the history of the world a great philosopher,Molla Sadra,internationally known for his book of “The Transcendent Theosophy in the Four Journeys of the Intellect.”
